About

Sarah Thea

As a costume designer with experience across film, television, and live performance, I bring artistic sensitivity and logistical clarity to every project. I thrive in fast-paced environments, collaborating closely with producers, directors, actors, and design teams. I’m high energy, organized and task-oriented.

Recent credits include serving as Assistant Costume Designer for Law & Order: SVU Seasons 26, 25, and 24, and for Nickelodeon’s The Really Loud House Season 1. I was the Costume Designer for the short film Sound Asleep and the episodic pilot Brownsville Bred (2021). I’ve also worked as a stylist for Ollie Pets Inc., Lovesac x KidSuper, Uplizna, and Ionis Pharmaceuticals.

Whether I’m assisting or taking the lead myself, my work is a balance of creative vision and practical solutions. Balancing multiple timelines and evolving needs while supporting character, I’m passionate about delivering designs authentic to each story. My design process is grounded in a love of research and passion for visual storytelling that enhances narrative.

My work in film and television has led to strengths in team management, shopping and sourcing, scheduling and conducting fittings, interdepartmental collaboration, attending meetings, dressing background, working with graphics and more. With a strong foundation in live performance, I bring a solid understanding of budgeting, clear communication, and deep knowledge of historical costume, vintage fashion and custom garment builds. I hold an MFA in Costume Design from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Design for Stage and Film.

From network television to independent film and avant-garde dance, I’m always open to new collaborations. I’d love to connect and discuss your next project.

Born and raised in South Florida, I was immersed in arts education from a young age, with a focus on theatrical storytelling through clothing. Following that passion, I moved to New York City to further pursue my career.

In theatre and dance, I’ve designed for companies and venues such as Clubbed Thumb, The New Ohio, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Urban Stages, Gibney Dance, New Chamber Ballet, American Dance Festival, Lake Tahoe Dance Collective, and the American Academy in Rome. I’ve managed costume builds for works by Lucinda Childs, Ron K. Brown, Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo, and Pennsylvania Ballet. My experience also includes working as a Cutter on Cinderella and The Machinist on Broadway at Timberlake Studios, and as a Draper at Parsons-Meares.

As a designer and instructor, I’ve collaborated with Columbia University, Marymount Manhattan College, Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, Stella Adler Studio of Acting, AMDA College and Conservatory, York College, and St. John’s College. From 2016 to 2020, I also worked as a Teaching Artist with Roundabout Theatre Company.

I’m fascinated by the transformative quality of clothing. Striving for visual balance and always thrilled by the escape of creating new worlds, I am continually rediscovering the unique space the human form commands.
